What is Thompson Technique?

This technique was developed by Dr. J. Clay Thompson and has completely evolved into one of the most utilized approaches because of its results. With this being said, this technique is unique because it requires the use of an adjusting table that actually moves with the adjustment, allowing for decompression of the disc and a natural healing approach for those who are suffering from ill health.

This is a specific chiropractic technique that uses mechanical and hands-on manipulation / adjustment which is primarily utilized to support healing of cervical and lumbar disc herniation, non-disc spinal disorders such as arthritis, and to increase mobility of spinal joints which allows the brain to communicate healing more efficiently.

Dr. Pat has used this technique in his practice for more then a decade.  This technique has a proven track record of interrupting the stress response and increasing function.  When combined with the ability that Koren Specific Technique provides it increases the potential for amazing results.

What is Koren Specific Technique?

Koren Specific Technique (KST for short) is a revolutionary chiropractic adjusting technique that provides our practice members with efficient and lasting results. Discovered by Dr. Tedd Koren in 2003, this technique is gentle yet very powerful.

Using an adjusting instrument called an ArthroStim that allows for precise and specific adjusting, there is no twisting, cracking, or popping. All ages benefit from KST chiropractic care from newborn to elderly and everyone in between. Because of the neurological (brain-based) nature of the post-doctoral study our doctor has pursued, he has found that KST chiropractic is the perfect way to “ask the body” what needs correction, which honors the wisdom of the brain and nervous system by never doing too much or too little.

See Dr. Pat correcting subluxations and neurological patterns while a practice member explains some of the great changes he has had while under the care of Dr. Keiran.

Stress and Neurologically Based Chiropractic Care

Generally when we feel overwhelmed or overloaded with tasks, we use the term “stress.” Stress is not always felt, how you feel is a poor indicator of health.  Anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our wellbeing is a stress, and “stressors” are agents or catalysts that cause the stress to occur. Symptoms usually include rise in blood pressure or heart rate, rapid breathing, increased muscle tension, anxiety, sweaty and cold hands/feet, and increased stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline remaining in the bloodstream.

Warning signs and symptoms of stress include memory problems, inability to concentrate, moodiness and irritability, agitation, depression, aches and pains, loss of sex drive, eating more or less, sleeping to much or too little, isolating oneself, and more.

How Neurologically Based Chiropractic Care Can Help with Stress

On a simple level, the brain and nervous system are strongly affected by stress. We find that many people are stuck in the “fight or flight” response based on the testing we do (see HERE).  Neurologically Based Chiropractic Care interrupts the patterns that keep us “stuck in stress” and help our brains build new neural pathways – allowing the body to heal itself properly and thus helping the way our bodies individually recover from everyday stress.

Slipped Disc and KST Chiropractic Care

A slipped, or prolapsed, disc is a medical condition affecting the spine that may cause severe lower back pain. The bones that make up the spine – the vertebrae – have cartilage discs between them, connected by a gel-like tissue. A slipped disc is caused when the soft part of the disc bulges through the circle of connective tissue. (Think of a jelly doughnut) The disc does not actually slip out of place, but rather it bulges, causing a push on the spinal cord.

An injured disc can many times be symptom-free. However, when pain does occur, it is often due to the pressure placed on the spinal cord. This type of pressure can result in feeling muscle spasm, paralyzed muscles, disturbed feelings in the limbs, and even problems controlling the bladder.

How KST Chiropractic Can Help Slipped Discs

A doctor of chiropractic will evaluate the area of concern and develop a treatment plan that includes chiropractic care to ease the slipped disc symptoms and facilitate healing. Chiropractic adjustments to remove subluxation (areas of disrupted communication) are proven effective for disc complaints. Using KST Chiropractic allows Dr. Pat to work precisely with the area of concern, including adjusting the disc itself if needed.  The precision of KST Chiropractic directs Dr. Pat to the exact location and indicates intensity and duration of contact.  KST Chiropractic adjustments clear interference in the nervous system, allowing the disc the ability to heal itself.  Frequently the care in our office avoids costly  surgery and improves function of the whole body for the patient.

Scoliosis and KST Chiropractic Care

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curve of the spine. Everyone’s spine has natural curves; however, those suffering from scoliosis have spines that also curve from side to side, independent from posture. The spine of a person with scoliosis looks more like an “S” or a “C” rather than a straight line. It usually does begin as a postural distortion, but may eventually become a permanent deformity. Allowed to advance, it may interfere with the lungs, heart and many other vital organs.

Why Does Scoliosis Occur?

Scoliosis is called an idiopathic disease because the cause is unknown. It is often caused by neuromuscular conditions (cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy), birth defects that affect bones of the spine to develop, and infections of the spine. Other causes of scoliosis include bone collapse, major back surgery and osteoporosis.

How KST Chiropractic Care Can Help Scoliosis:

Dr. Pat uses KST Chiropractic Care for gentle and effective adjustments and may possibly include bio-feedback training for maximum results.  Usually, scoliosis correction depends on age, how much you’re likely to grow, how much curving there is, and potential for adaptability.  Significant research suggests that the function and structure of the spine can be improved by chiropractic adjustments, thus relieving the discomfort associated with scoliosis.  Dr. Pat has had success with many scoliosis cases and enjoys working with children and young adults to improve health outcomes, naturally.

Sciatica and KST Chiropractic Care

Sciatica, or sciatic neuritis, is a distracting pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve – beginning in the lower back and extending down one or both legs.

Symptoms of sciatica may include lower back pain, buttock pain, numbness or weakness in various parts of the leg and foot, and a shooting pain making it difficult to walk or stand up. The level of pain varies from person to person – from infrequent and irritating to quite severe and debilitating. Simple movements such as coughing or sneezing can lead to excruciating pain for some people dealing with sciatica.

Why Does Sciatic Pain Occur?

Sciatica symptoms occur when the large sciatic nerve is irritated. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, made up of isolated nerve roots that branch out from the spine in the lower back. When the nerve becomes irritated, swollen or frayed, sciatica is likely to occur.

How KST Chiropractic Can Help Relieve Sciatica

KST Chiropractic adjustments are gentle and effective, addressing the area of concern in short order.  A visit to our office can also help assess the nature of the mis-communication in the body, which is frequently stress related.  Dr. Pat has a proven track record for helping patients recover from sciatica and he teaches strategies for avoiding the problem in the future.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care

If you are pregnant or want to be, chiropractic care is a natural choice.  Improved function of the nervous system provides improved function of all body functions, including the chance of becoming pregnant.

As a pregnancy develops, stress is increasingly placed on the body, causing some discomfort for some women. A woman’s center of gravity immediately begins to shift forward during pregnancy. Although a woman’s posterior section of the pelvis has the capacity and depth enabling her to carry a baby, the displaced weight still increases stress on her joints. As the baby gets bigger, a woman’s weight continues to project forward, curving her lower back and placing extra stress on the spinal disks.

Towards the end of the pregnancy, the sciatic nerve may be irritated when the baby’s head begins pressing down on a woman’s back, legs, and buttocks.

How KST Chiropractic Can Help Pregnancy

Before pregnancy, a visit to the chiropractor can detect any imbalances in the pelvis or elsewhere that may contribute to pregnancy complications or discomfort. During pregnancy, chiropractic care can aid in supporting relief of nausea, back, neck or joint pain, and can even prevent a potential cesarean delivery. Research has also found that chiropractic adjustments can provide relief from low-back pain, muscle tensions, headaches and shoulder problems in pregnant women.

In preparation for delivery, chiropractors can help assure optimum biomechanics in the hips and spine- reducing labor complications. Chiropractic care for your body during pregnancy will avoid unnecessary pressure on the abdomen, and can reduce undue stress to the uterus and to the supporting ligaments. Establishing pelvic balance has been shown to allow the best positioning for the fetus, therefore easing the delivery process.

Expectant mothers that were adjusted by Dr. Pat during pregnancy happily report needing fewer drugs or interventions during pregnancy and labor and shorter labor time than prior birth experiences when not under chiropractic care.

Even after childbirth, in the weeks following labor and delivery, the ligaments that loosened during pregnancy can begin to tighten up again.  New mothers often report improved function during this time when they continue with KST Chiropractic Care.

Is it a Pinched Nerve?

The nerves that extend from your brain and spinal cord are essential for sending critical messages throughout your entire body, and back.

When these nerves are irritated or compromised, the body often sends a sharp shooting ‘pinching’ feeling as a warning. This is nothing to ignore! Essentially, this is a warning of a damaged and/or injured nerve. This nerve disruption may come from either the repetition of a certain body motion, or holding the body’s position for a long period of time. Other causes of irritated nerves may be: herniated disks (when a cervical disk bulges), degeneration of disk (spine degenerating due to age or other factors), and bony growths (bony growths in your neck due to arthritis or degenerative disk disease).

Is It A Pinched Nerve or Irritated Nerve?

A nerve rarely is “pinched”, most often it is irritated or compromised causing the entire flow of information to become garbled (remember that childhood game of telephone?) the nerve may stop communication and eventually may cause that nerve fiber to die. When enough fibers stop working, the skin may feel perpetually numb and muscles may stop contracting.

Can KST Chiropractic Care Help?

KST Chiropractic care has been proven to be effective for irritated or chafed nerves, as it concentrates on nerve system communication and checking specifically for constriction or miscommunication of nerve messages in the body. Finding and clearing the specific area to improve the proper communication in your nerve system. This improved communication between brain and body will ease the tension & stress, allowing improved function.

PMS and Chiropractic Care

Premenstrual Syndrome is a collection of symptoms often associated with the emotional and physical ongoing connections a female experiences before and during her menstrual cycle.

Symptoms can include tender breast, fatigue, bloating, depression, mood swings, and irritability. The body may crave foods it usually doesn’t.

How KST Chiropractic Can Help PMS Symptoms

When a woman’s reproductive system is altered by miscommunication between the brain and body, PMS symptoms can be more severely triggered. Alleviating any subluxation (garbled information) to the body can be a great help for women during her monthly cycle. Don’t let symptoms get out of control – let us help you with the proper assessment and treatment!

Chiropractic and Neck Pain

Your neck and shoulders work hard every day. Neck pain is almost a universal human experience. The slightest deviation in the relationship between the bones of the cervical spine can cause pain and limit head and neck mobility. Research shows that chiropractic treatments can relieve neck pain more effectively than any pain medication.

Neck pain can derive from any type of neck strain or neck injury (whiplash), virus infection of the throat (which may lead to lymph gland swelling thus putting strain on the neck), headaches, poor posture, uncomfortable sleeping positions or even physical and emotional stress. Spinal manipulation and/or chiropractic neck adjustments have been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of neck pain, regardless of the cause.
